Haršsošin frétt, dökkleit/ur eša želdökku/r? Put out to dry

Besta fyrirsögnin hingaš til: ,,Money, not morality, biggest reason  CBS fire Imus".

,,Imus, 66, had a long history of inflammatory remarks. But something struck a raw nerve when he targeted the Rutgers team - which includes a class valedictorian, a future lawyer and a musical prodigy - after they lost in the NCAA championship game".

Is this Denmark?

The firing of Don Imus over some stupid racial remark is not only a blow against the First Amendment for free speech, it is the American version of the Danish cartoon affair. What about Imus' constitutionally protected free speech?

,,Imus has complained bitterly about a lack of support from one black politician, Harold Ford Jr., even though he strongly backed Ford's campaign for Senate in Tennessee last year. Ford, now head of the Democratic Leadership Council, said Thursday he'll leave it to others to decide Imus' future.

"I don't want to be viewed as piling on right now because Don Imus is a good friend and a decent man," Ford said. "However, he did a reprehensible thing."

Ég vil ekki vita hvernig hann talar um Lakers.

The Times goes on to state: "For the most part the Imus supporting cast is a group of middle-aged white men, all of whom do some comedy writing or performing on the show. Sometimes their fingerprints are little seen."

For example, Imus' news reader Charles McCord ghost-writes Larry Kenney's outrageous monologues as Rev. Jerry Falwell and Sen. Ted Kennedy.

In February, the fake Falwell called the NBC All-Star weekend "basically a race riot."

McGuirk, for his part, has referred to the New York Knicks as chest-bumping pimps.

And just before Imus called the Rutgers players "nappy-headed hos" on his April 4 show, McGuirk had referred to them as "some hard-core hos."

McGuirk is not talking about the controversy, and did not respond to the Times' request for a comment. But in a May 2000 interview with the Times, he defended the show's humor.

"It's meant to be descriptive, not pejorative," he said. "If the NBA were peopled by a bunch of Romanians, we'd be making fun of Romanians. To not satirize someone just because of their race, I think that would be patronizing and racist in itself.

"The bottom line is, I'm not a bigot."
